Funerals and Memorial Services

Planning a funeral service is a stressful time in anyone’s life. Numbers of decisions that must be made in a short amount of time can be overwhelming. Thankfully, there are professionals, such as the funeral director and pastor, who can be a source of comfort.

Music can be a great source of comfort. Songs performed by a vocalist and pianist/organist at the funeral service can convey how much your loved one will be missed, how beautifully their life was lived, or how important God was in their life. Often at times like this, the family is at a loss for words, but a great song can fill your hearts with comfort and peace. Music is a healer.

What happens when the family doesn’t want a church service, but still wants funeral music that’s beautiful, meaningful and memorable? Gerra Gembarosky is a singer, pianist, and organist, joined by professional guitarist Rick Butler, performs for funeral services held at funeral homes. She meets with the family in person, by email or phone to plan a funeral service that family and friends will remember for years to come! Close your eyes and you will hear harps, violins, pipe organ, bagpipes, and piano--mimicked so well you may not know it’s a piano keyboard until you actually see her playing it!

Cocktail Music

Having a professional pianist and guitarist add an elegant touch. You may even get the “Wow!” factor from your guests, because as they walk into the room, they will be impressed you’ve done something a cut above the rest. Don’t worry if your venue doesn’t have a piano; Gerra can bring her portable keyboard and PA system. Cocktail music can be with or without vocals.

Cocktail hour can often be boring. Wedding guests have the excitement at the church of the bride walking down the aisle and congratulating the happy couple after the ceremony. Then they don’t see them again for at least a couple of hours until they make their grand entrance into the venue. How can you entertain your guests during that time when you are busy having your photographs taken? You can have beautiful piano and guitar music played during cocktails, so that it breaks up the monotony of your DJ playing music for several hours in a row.

Light jazz, ballades, standards and contemporary selections are played during your cocktail hour. Often Gerra and Rick get requests from the wedding guests to do a special song or two. Live music creates an enjoyable ambience and makes your guests feel that they are attending a very special event!  And that event is YOUR wedding!

More About

Gerra Gembarosky

Gerra grew up in a family of musicians. Her grandfather, an immigrant from Italy, sang and played the mandolin and guitar; her mother was a singer, and her Uncle Al Pontremoli, was a jazz guitarist. He formed a band in high school with his childhood friend, Johnny Costa, most well-known as the jazz pianist for Mister Rogers. Both incredibly talented as teenagers.

It was Gerra’s mother, who early on in her marriage determined that music was going to be the focal point of her family’s life. She made sure that all 3 of her children had music lessons, and her dad made sure that they got there! Holidays were filled with music, especially when Uncle Al visited from Cleveland and jammed with Gerra and her siblings. Those early experiences had a profound impact on her life. At 14 years of age, she became a professional musician, playing keyboards and singing in her family band “Fly By Night.” Gerra’s mom booked the engagements and her dad (the greatest dad in the world!) accompanied her and her siblings on all their engagements - the best roadie ever! Their band was very successful for many years and provided music for many wedding receptions in the Alle-Kiski area. Gerra could be found on Sunday mornings playing the organ and singing for Mass at Mt. St. Peter Church and the Polish National Catholic Church in New Kensington.

After high school graduation, Gerra studied music at Temple University and Duquesne University, where she obtained degrees in Music Performance (Voice) and Music Education. Her first solo performance in a lounge was at the former Hyatt House, where she sang with James Taylor when he was performing at the Civic Arena. She then travelled all across the country for several years as a vocalist and pianist.

Upon returning to Pittsburgh, Gerra performed in the grand lobby of the former Westin William Penn Hotel. It began as a 3-month engagement and turned into 3 years. It was during this time that she joined the band “ACT I” and began performing for wedding receptions and ceremonies, something she loved doing during high school. She also held the position as choir director and organist at St. Mary of Czestochowa Church in New Kensington while working at the Westin William Penn.

Gerra earned two degrees in music from Duquesne University. Being a voice major required singing in several languages, something she was very comfortable doing. Having grown up hearing Italian and Polish spoken by her grandparents, languages were something that she always had an interest in. Knowing this, her father suggested that she ‘check out’ the program at the University of Pittsburgh that offered Japanese. She took his advice, and 4 years later obtained a Masters Degree and was hired by the Shaler Area School District as a full-time Japanese language teacher! She also keeps busy with “Chocolate Fountain Heaven” a company which she started in 2003. Music and chocolate have always been her passions!

In March of 2008, Gerra performed for a private party for President George W. Bush when he came to Sewickley Heights for a fundraiser. In September 2008 she was hired to play for a reception for Colonel Oliver North. Both were once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Are you looking for a beautiful memento of the funeral service?

Gerra is not only a Pittsburgh musician--singer and pianist--she has an interest in photography and also loves to create beautiful funeral service bulletins as keepsakes. Photographs, poems, scripture readings, song titles, the order of service, pallbearers’ names, etc., are just some of the listings that she can include in the program.

Duo * Trio * Quartet

Gerra’s Trio or Quartet is perfect for those smaller affairs who don’t want loud, thumping, high-energy DJ music for their wedding reception. In fact, it’s best for smaller parties and receptions, where the music is classy, enjoyable, and the guests are actually able to talk without shouting!

They play light jazz, standards, contemporary ballades, and are CD equipped to play music during our intermissions - special requests like line dances, ethnic tunes, etc. For instance, if the bride and groom have rehearsed something special for their first dance as husband and wife, then they would play their CD in place of the band playing the song.

Pricing depends on the amount of time that you’d like them to play as well as the distance that must be traveled.

Do you want a sample listen?

Gerra is busy recording a few songs for you to hear. But until those are done, please don’t hesitate to call her to make an appointment for her to sing and play the grand piano for you “live” as you sit in the comfort of her living room in Cranberry Township. If you like what you hear, you will love her “complete sound” with all the added musical equipment. Of course there is no obligation on your part to book her at that mini-audition!
